Application
Admission to Mohican Education Center is based on the following criteria indicating a student is at risk of dropping out of school before high school graduation:
- two (2) or three (3) years behind grade level;
- excessive absences/tardies because of illness, frequent moves, parenting, independent living arrangements, or other extenuating circumstances;
- academic deficiencies or performance below assessed skills level;
- needs small group instruction or non-traditional teaching, learning, and evaluation aproaches; and
- there should be no frequent behavior problems that warrant severe disciplinary action.
Maintaining an Acceptable Level of Academic Performance
In order to maintain an acceptable level of academic performance at Mohican Education Center, a student must:
- show growth at average levels of achievement in the basic skills content areas and electives measured by grades (maintain C or higher);
- pass the LEAP test (8th) or show improvement on standard scores on iLEAP (5th, 6th, 7th).
Acceleration
The progress of 5th, 6th, and 7th grade students will be monitored during the school year to determine potential for acceleration. The following factors will be reviewed:
- grades
- attendance
- discipline
- progress on placement test
Within the next grading period, his/her performance in that grade will be reviewed and a decision will be made for permanent placement in that grade or a return to the former grade. At the end of the year in addition to having passing grades, an accelerated 5th, 6th, or 7th grade student must have a specific score determined by a committee on their iLEAP and/or EduSoft test or attend summer school in order to be promoted to the next grade.
